  • Danny Orlowski, the frontperson of New York techno-punk outfit Deli Girls, has accused Leipzig's TRIP Festival of refusing to broadcast the group's pro-Palestinian visuals. Orlowski spoke out on Instagram on Monday, May 6th, following the duo's appearance at the festival. "We asked for a Palestinian flag [to be included in our visuals], since every show of the tour we state 'Free Palestine' and wear or display a keffiyeh," the post read. This was met with "discomfort" and "passive aggressive behaviour" from staff members, Orlowski continued. "'Free Palestine from what?' they asked. They made heinous statements and implications regarding the genocide of Palestinians, and improper use of the term antisemitism." Deli Girls decided to address the situation onstage, and played harsh noise instead of their own material as a form of protest. "We'll not be quiet or allow ourselves to be censored in regard to Palestinian liberation and the ongoing genocide," said Orlowski. "These cultural institutions are too comfortable with being what they call apolitical." Speaking to Resident Advisor, TRIP organiser Niclas Kliebisch expressed "solidarity with all victims of the war," but justified the festival's decision by pointing to its no-flag policy. "We were okay with the ['Free Palestine'] writing," he said. "But not the flag, because of our policy. It doesn't matter which flag it is." TRIP Festival took place from May 2nd through 5th. Other artists on the lineup included Romare, Matias Aguayo and Kris Baha. The festival venue, Institut fuer Zukunft, previously drew criticism for removing a patron who chose to wear a keffiyeh in 2021. IfZ later addressed this situation on its website, conceding that "enforcing the scarf ban misses its mark and that situations are sometimes too complex to resolve with under-complex rules." Read Orlowski's post in full. We'll continue to report on this story as it unfolds.
