- The singer's early catalogue will get another look in May.
Island Records will release Grace Jones: The Disco Years as a box set on May 4th.
The Jamaican model turned pop icon was a pivotal figure in the downtown NYC scene of the late '70s, hosting the 1977 Studio 54 party to which Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers were famously denied entrance. (They would use the unexpected free time to write "Le Freak"). The father of the disco mix, Tom Moulton, was on production reins for the first three records, Portfolio, Fame and Muse, which were recorded at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia, home to Philadelphia International Records and birthplace of the warm "Philly Sound."
Though aficionados often refer to Jones' '80-82 Compass Point sessions as her most fertile creative period, the initial trilogy, full of campy disco, comes with its fair share of hits, such as her cover of "La Vie En Rose," which appears on Portfolio and will also be released as a limited 12-inch on Record Store Day. The remastered set also includes a number of alternate mixes and instrumental versions.
