- Boleros Valses y Mas is out later this month via Stones Throw.
Stones Throw will release Frankie Reyes' Boleros Valses y Mas on July 25th.
Frankie Reyes is an alias of prolific LA producer Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker, who's also known as GB (Gifted & Blessed). (His other monikers include The Abstract Eye and The Reflektor.) He says the inspiration for his Stones Throw debut formed when LA web radio institution Dublab asked him to participate in an event themed around Latin American modernism.
The label site has the following quote from Reyes-Whittaker: "I thought about how I might capture the essence of this theme using my instrument of choice, the synthesizer. What came to mind was to cover some of the classic Latin American compositions that I grew up hearing around me and have grown to love as I've gotten older, most of them in the bolero style but a few in the waltz, son, and even mariachi style." Reyes-Whittaker re-worked the classic compositions for the Oberheim synthesizer, a method fitting into his "technoindigenous studies," an invented genre with which he seeks to unite ancestral traditions with modern technology.
We recently hosted GB in our LA offices as part of our RA Sessions film series. Check out the live clip here.
