  • Craig Richards is starting a new festival called Houghton, with the first edition taking place in Norfolk next August. The fabric resident is working with Gottwood, which is overseeing the production while Richards handles the curation. Taking place from August 11th through 13th, the festival's home is Houghton Hall in Norfolk, in an area surrounded by a lake and woodland. Equipped with an extended license, the festival's aim is to bring together art, music and sculpture—venues include an abandoned warehouse, a subterranean bowl and an art and sculpture park. Each DJ will be given extended sets, with Richards also encouraging spontaneous back-to-backs. Ricardo Villalobos will DJ and also play live as one half of VILOD alongside Max Loderbauer. (It'll be that project's UK debut.) DJ sets also come from the likes of Nicolas Jaar, Floating Points, Seth Troxler, Andrew Weatherall, Ben UFO, Midland, Sonja Moonear, Roman Flügel, Nicolas Lutz, Ivan Smagghe, Felix Dickinson, Adrian Sherwood, Binh, Nightmares On Wax, The Orb's Dr Alex Paterson, Trojan Soundsystem, Mr Scruff, Vladimir Ivkovic and SAOIRSE, while Howie B & Borgar Magnason and Convextion perform live. We spoke with Richards via email to find out more about Houghton:
Tell us about the ethos behind the festival and how you went selecting the lineup. As artist in residence and musical director of fabric's Saturday night I had, and now with this latest news will continue to have, the pleasure to play alongside and invite the very best of the very best. From new to the most established. This 17-year residency journey has allowed me to forge opinions which I can now turn into the grand task of curation. The ethos is simply to do something with a difference. Whilst presenting DJs I have followed for years along with great talent that remains unknown, and to some extent under-celebrated. The curation will be based on my heart and not commerce. There will be a great emphasis on visual art, incorporating the existing collection at Houghton and specific commissions so the gathering will not just be music-led. This is very exciting for me as I studied at art school and continue to paint on a daily basis. How did you decide on the location? One of the driving forces in my decision to take this challenge was the venue. It's perfect in size and stature. Well appointed, picturesque and full of possibilities. As soon as I saw it my imagination ran wild. It has an extended license so curating the mornings are a very exciting possibility. DJs will perform long sets and various sets at different times. I consider the artists playing to be experts in their field.
