- Watch the video for the May LP's first single, "Eternal."
Holly Herndon is back with a new album on 4AD, coming this May.
PROTO was made in collaboration with Herndon, partner Mathew Dryhurst and ensemble developer Jules LaPlace's AI "baby" Spawn, which first appeared on her and Jlin's late 2018 track called "Godmother." (Herndon explains more about the Spawn project here.) The American producer also enlisted a group of vocalists, developers and "an inhuman intelligence housed in a DIY souped-up gaming PC" for the album, according to the label.
"There's a pervasive narrative of technology as dehumanizing. We stand in contrast to that," Herndon says. "Choosing to work with an ensemble of humans is part of our protocol. I don't want to live in a world in which humans are automated off stage. I want an AI to be raised to appreciate and interact with that beauty."
Herndon's last record was her 2015 album, Platform, also released on 4AD. Before that, she released a 12-inch and her debut LP, Movement on RVNG Intl.
