  • A new documentary about the history of New York's red-light district has aired. Debuting last month at The Center in Greenwich Village, Playing With Dolls celebrates trans women and their influence on the city's nightlife since the '60s. The film was created by Pearl Martin, who moved to New York in the '80s. The documentarian revisits venues that were integral to the scene, including The Gilded Grape, Barnum Room, Sally's Hideaway, Edelweiss and LaFleur. "The red-light district was an anything-goes kind of scene," Martin told local publication W42ST. "Trans girls, we used to have our own nightclubs; it was just incredible how New York used to be, with such a vibe and electricity in the streets." Playing With Dolls premiered on November 9th. Martin is currently looking for the documentary to be screened at film festivals. Photo: David Perry
