Terror Danjah - You Make Me Feel

  • Remember rhythm & grime? No? Well, I can understand that: The short attempt at a proper movement was headed up by grime legend Terror Danjah, culminating in the almost-hit of his tragically rare "So Sure," one of his sweetest pre-resurrection productions. He told me in an interview last year that he was making moves to revive the ill-fated subgenre, and this year he's made good on that promise. The stunning "Full Attention" released on his own Hardrive label was proof he could do pop as well as aggro pomp, and he follows it up with the most high-profile R&G release yet, a single on Hyperdub. Terror forces UK Funky songstress Meleka's vocals into the same bunched-up syllabic flow as the song that made her famous ("Go") so oddly catchy. It's one of Terror's most fluid productions, tumbling down each bar gracefully somewhere in between old-school garage and grime. Terror gets his metaphors a little mixed up in the chorus where he pairs an awkward synth horn line with Meleka's rising vocals in the midst of his spidery drums, but otherwise it's all silk. The B-side—a collaboration with regular partner D.O.K.—doesn't make any overtures towards R&G but it's a prime Terror production regardless, with streaks of anxious strings and clanging oil drums representing the taut balance between cartoonish and violent that we expect from Terror nowadays.
