Tom Flynn - People Everyday EP

  • Tom Flynn's debut for Hypercolour ticks all the right boxes and then some. Characterised by classic garage motifs, the four pieces here don't necessarily present a great range but they are quite definitive and very much of their time. There has been a huge resurgence of interest in the dubby sound of New York/New Jersey garage over the past few years, and Flynn nails the sound but doesn't forget to occasionally update it. (In the case of "People Everyday," for example, by including some subtle, helium-induced vocal samples.) Generally, it's the quality of the arrangements that grabs your attention—and the little idiosyncrasies that are allowed to flourish within them. "Truth Hurts" is a delightfully wobbly piece of dubby garage with a well-manipulated vocal. "Tokyo Rising" has deep keys that herald changes in tempo while "Suzy Swap Meet" behaves in a similar way but at breakneck speed.
