- More often than not, distortion and heavy noise bring with them meanness. This is exactly what made London duo Rezzett's last two releases for The Trilogy Tapes so intriguing—despite their harsh corrosion, trudging drums and bad-trip cover art, the music just didn't feel dark. In fact, at times it was luminous. You can sense the whoosh factor in a runway video from Rezzett's live set during last year's Tokyo Fashion Week. Subjecting unaware fashionistas to 30 minutes of aggressively lo-fi techno could, imaginably, cause distress. But the sound—a hazy tangle of prettiness and garbled decay—seemed to dazzle. Goodness, Rezzett's third TTT release, follows suit.
The title track is strongest, and exemplifies the duo's allure. Behind sheet metal pangs and scrawled roughness, a swelling radiance brings waves of euphoria. "Twizzta" is a slow chugger steeped in battery acid, but despite its sour dissonance, it feels rather tame. "Boiling Ds" ends on a more absorbing note—spurts of hi-hats and eerie pads wind into an anxious headtrip. The sound is as caustic as ever, but the sooty glimmer of their past records has partly worn away.
