- With its four previous releases, Young Turks sub-label Whities has delivered techno in straightforward (Terron's Whities001) and experimental (Terron's 003 and Minor Science's 004) shades, as well as its crowning achievement, Kowton's 002. The label's one constant has been quality, and Dutch producer Reckonwrong's Whities005 continues the streak.
No one who heard Reckonwrong's debut EP, this year's Especially For You on Pinkman, will be surprised that this is the most oddball Whities releases to date. It's very much a record interested in innovation—from the wriggling, filmic harpsichord notes that suddenly burst through the chugging clatter of "Luscious Lips" to the sampled coastal sounds that engulf closer "Tucked Away."
It says a lot that "Magical Journey" is the most straightforward thing here. The cocksure stomp of kick drums, snare rolls and pigeon-chested bass notes slide from twanging disorientation into something more linear. Its scattershot disintegration is followed by "Radio Magic Tracks," a return to filtered regality thanks to vivid, off-kilter brass and sparse percussion. That subtle ceremonial feel closes Whities005 with the swaying ensemble of horns on "Tucked Away." They're all slowly swept away by the sound of seagulls and the rhythmic crash of the tide. It's an unexpected, strangely meditative end to another essential Whities EP.
