C-Lektro - C-Lektro 4

  • Whether they were making sleepy house in Canada or trippy minimal in Berlin, 2016 was marked by artists being inspired by electro. But where more visible producers reaped the rewards of tapping into the sound, C-Lektro's second release release was quietly superb. The Main Records affiliates sounded like the genuine article, wearing electro like a well-worn glove rather than a fancy new hat. Like C-Lektro 2, their latest 12-inch bundles weird moments with surprisingly poignant passages. The B3 is a good example of the former, using a trusty 808 framework as a platform for a barrage of wacky effects. What sounds like a malfunctioning vacuum cleaner slurps bursts of white noise while a constellation of starry lights twinkles above the groove. The A2 is an example of the latter. Contrasting a twitchy, major-keyed bassline with melancholic clouds of synth is a simple move that's more emotionally arresting than you might expect. That C-Lektro cram so many tunes into their records makes it seem like they churn them out easily, but a light touch keeps them feeling fresh and durable.
