Matt Karmil - Tell Me Why

  • Matt Karmil has kept up a steady stream of fuzzy deep house records since his excellent - - - - album in 2014. His sound is warm and uncomplicated, laying down smooth chords and obscure soul samples over gentle beats suited to warm-up sets and late-night living room sessions. He's journeyed to a few labels over the years, including a stopover at Bristol's Idle Hands for another great album, but none suit him better than Studio Barnhus, a label that shares his love for dusty samples and cheery atmospheres. Tell Me Why, Karmil's second EP for the Stockholm outlet, sees him hit a variety of moods within his trademark sound. A fat descending bassline makes "UG" the package's funkiest tune. The vibe is heady for the first two minutes, but we get signature Karmil chords at the midway point. A slamming piano house track with a thudding kick drum and filter effects, "Mag" is about as banging as Karmil gets, the kind of hands-in-the-air disco-house tune you often hear in sets from the Studio Barnhus cofounder Axel Boman. "All Together" is classic feel-good Karmil with a twisted outro, while "Tell Me Why" is almost beatless, with only the faintest of kick drums keeping time. This is another EP from a producer who has mastered his own formula.
