- The legendary drum & bass project returns with four powerful tracks.
- Since George Levings revived Commix in 2016, he's spent his time looking back at the legendary drum & bass project with the Generation series. First, he released some old material from the vaults, before using the second EP to explore some of the styles of dance music that influenced Commix back in the day. (Ten more records records from the duo were unearthed this year.) The third and final Generation EP finishes it off with one track that sounds straight out of the Call To Mind glory days and two others that probe the deeper reaches of the project.
"The Time" is archetypal Commix. There's a chunky bassline, reverb-soaked vocal gasps and perfect drum sounds polished to a bowling-ball sheen. The real treat is on the B-side, with the darker, sparser and almost creepy movement of "Fragile State." Then there's "Cherry." Though it feels too easy to reference the Autonomic sounds, "Cherry"'s soft, stuttering drum pattern, glowing-ember chords and moody bassline are twilit but assertive. Whether the influence is taken from John Carpenter, Detroit techno or dBridge, it comes together in a very Commix way.
