- Gqom meets hardcore meets military march.
- In this year's Label Of The Month feature on Shanghai's SVBKVLT, I suggested that Eli Osheyack embodies the the SVBKVLT ethos. He hasn't put a record out on the label since 2018, but his influence is strong and he's become something of an elder statesman among the label crew. With Memory Hierarchy, he created what might be the definitive SVBKVLT record. The EP combines almost all of the label's idiosyncrasies into a release that expands on hardcore techno, gabber and ballroom styles.
Memory Hierarchy kicks off with "Liar's Dividend," which is all martial drums, swooping strings, bleating horns and guttural grunts. Those vocal sounds repeat on "Mutual Shaping," a fast hard drum track that replaces the aggression of past Osheyack material with newfound agility. If you're looking for brute power, look no further than "Testimony," which reinforces heaving gqom with a hardcore techno kick drum. This is the kind of unexpected fusion that's defined Osheyack's work since the beginning and made him a signature artist on one of experimental club music's leading imprints.
