Blawan - Under Belly

  • The modular synth head gets funky and weird on his first track for XL, which calls back to some of his earliest material.

  • Modular journeyman broke Techno twitter last week with the first taste of his forthcoming EP on XL, Woke Up Right Handed. And with Roberts in particularly vintage form, it's not hard to see why he sent the dance floor intelligentsia into meltdown. There is a certain funk, a discombobulated swing, to the drums on "Under Belly," that we haven't heard since his "Getting Me Down" days. And while the density of the reverb recalls his work with Karenn, the chords peaking through are groovier than you'd expect—they sound as liberating and as goofy as Charlie Chaplin dancing on the assembly line in Modern Times.
