Kalli - Oniron

  • Όνειρο, or oniron, is the Greek word for dream. On Brighton-based producer (and GODDEZZ cofounder) Kalli's EP of the same name, he churns out surreal soundscapes that interpret several of his own dreams from the past few years. Playful breaks, vibrant drum patterns and wacky sound effects coutse throughout Oniron, creating a fantastical dreamworld. On "Automated Posse" Kalli launches straight into thumping drums and squelchy synths, with vocal snippets tumbling haphazardly around. There's a lot going on, but Kalli tweaks each texture with precision, making the track wibble and wobble, coalescing like the bizarre narratives that come in dreams. The same goes for "Br3eath (Tonsil Mix)," which teems with quirky sounds and frantic melodies. A Darth Vader-like vocal slips in at one point, stating, "You are now entering the real world," when in reality it feels like the furthest thing from the real world in Kalli's kaleidoscopic landscape. The pace slows on "OutsiderDreamerLadder" with somber pads that give it a purgatorial atmosphere. The off-kilter vibes return on "Furlofunk," with a creaky noise, like someone winding up an old toy, just one more wonderfully strange element on a truly wigged-out EP.
