Persher - Man With The Magic Soap

  • It's easy to imagine Jamie Roberts and Arthur Cayzer alternating between Black Flag and Regis records as they wait to check-in their modular synths and drum machines in neverending RyanAir queues. The duo's distorted and pounding techno has always had a punk edge in its rawness and immediacy. Now they up the ante with Persher, a project that swaps electronics for live instruments as the duo embrace their inner moshers. "Man With The Magic Soap" is a roller coaster through the terrifying fringes of rock 'n' roll noise: Roberts' vocals are full-on gnarly grindcore (cf. Barney Greenway), the drum fills and Annihilation Time-style riff tip their hat to classic SoCal punk, while the "pick-up-the-change" breakdown is hardcore at its purest. But between the crunched guitars and nightmare-inducing shrieks, there's a looped vocal refrain and swelling feedback that feels more techno than metal. It's as if Persher is Karenn's mirror image: hardcore with techno buried inside.
