  • DJ Python has wrung a lot from the "deep reggaeton" concept he started playing around with circa 2015, starting out with hypnotic, swung techno and breaking it further into abstract shapes. The result is records like Mas Amable, among the most crossover-friendly, memorable and sumptuous electronic music full-lengths in recent memory. The pop potential of this music is enormous, which Python finally seems to realize on this new EP with Colombian vocalist Ela Minus, who adds a breathy, almost clammy human touch to Python's delicate tapestries. On the opener "Kiss U," Python expands on the Autechre-isms of Derretirse. The beat skews towards hip-hop, contrasting slow, panoramic chords with intricate glitchy sounds, as Minus sings a melancholy hook: "I'm not holding on / I'm not letting go." It's a cocoon of sound suffused with that warm DJ Python glow, an effortless move into vocal territory hinted at on Mas Amable. On "Abril Lluvias Mil," Ela Minus works against a backdrop of scratchy beats and wobbly synths that move like the liquid in a lava lamp, a drowsy but adventurous song that groggily ambles from hook to hook, as if the singer just woke up. If any song here is a hit, though, it's "Pájaros en Verano," with an irresistible mallet line that mirrors Ela Minus's lilting melody. Python pushes it over the edge with a pendulous beat that seems to feed off its own momentum, swinging forward and forward into infinity, a rhythm pitched between the dance floor and a daydream.
