Gaiser - Neural Block

  • If Gaiser is any example, minimal techno is not empty music by any imagination. Gaiser’s ‘And Answer’ EP was one 2006’s underground gems, and now he moves in a new direction with ‘Neural Block’. On side A, the title track is intricate, layered and warm, cleverly stripping out the sounds, samples, and slack bubbles that make up the unnecessary parts of tracks. A2 ‘Half Life’ recalls Sleeparchive: a metallic drama strictly laced with dancefloor data, sub bass, bubbling clicks and decaying voices. Flip over and side two begins with ‘Seepage’, a call and response number with an evolving bassline and residual synth pulse that conjures cinematic light and dark, while ‘Separation’ is all dark samples, intricate snares and rolling drums – this is snare and sub bass sophistication that’ll soundtrack deviant behaviour at any hour. While ‘Neural Block’ might appear masculine at first glance, look deeper and you’ll find breathtaking detail, intricacy and sonic complexity. Gaiser cleverly plays with ideas of rhythm, textures and layers, without ever losing sight of the dancefloor, and it’s refreshing to see such organic production surfacing in the minimal sphere.
