Ada - Fizzmann EP

  • Even with the understanding that it's dubious (at best) to assign gender roles to producer's works, Ada's work for the Areal label is the softer, female counterpart to Basteroid's duck upsetting and Metope's braga breeps. Michaela Dippel's latest is no different in this respect: 'Fizzman' is anchored by two spindly melodies that do little more than mirror one another. The dopey bassline and backbeat synth stabs building around them, however, lead into the same sort of climax that also made 'Bum Bum' one of her most satisfying tracks. Dippel gets about as hard-edged as you're likely to hear her on the flip. 'Barren Space' stutters its warm, bulby melody amid one of her trademark two-note metallic yawns. Until she unleashes a spot of cowbell, that is. Anyone suspecting that this might be some deep, dark ode to loneliness would only be half right. 'Barren Space' is deep alright, but things only get dark when you realize that it might be another few months before we'll hear another idiosyncratic slab from Areal.
