Moritz Von Oswald Trio - Restructure 2

  • The Trio seem to have a policy of cracking out releases in a rapid-fire manner. I'm certainly not complaining, but it'd be kind of pointless if, as might be expected from a collective with an ostensible agenda of spacey jamming, their sound wasn't evolving with the same rapidity. Apparently, though, it is; as a precursor to the upcoming Horizontal Structures, Restructure 2 shows a (relatively speaking) warmer side to the group, with the focus shifting from abstract graininess to tonality. This evolution is probably down to the addition of Rhythm and Sound collaborator Paul St. Hilaire on guitar and Marc Muellbauer on double bass. The proximity of "Restructure 2" to straight-ahead dance is combined with much less obvious nuances, whose nature lead to an unsettling effect that's all the more deeply affecting. Plucking guitars: nice. Chunky double bass: mmm. But those two are ever-so-slightly yet significantly falling over each other, loosely flopping with a lack of spinal support. Dissonance, and the familiar rough clattering, shivers just on the edge of perception; but we're lulled into a false sense of security by the snug midrange. They know exactly what they're doing. What's more, we don't. The Digital Mystikz remix has an open cavern of space in between a sub-monobass, airy pads that flow between disturbing and soothing, a punchy dubstep skank, and flittering congas. It's an individualistic lunar groove, which completes a very tasteful piece of wax indeed.
