- The LP, out February 14th, is an "intimate reflection on the black femme experience from multiple vantage points."
MHYSA will release her new album, NEVAEH, on Hyperdub next year.
The LP, which MHYSA started writing after the release of her debut album Fantasii in the fall of 2017, is an "intimate reflection on the black femme experience from multiple vantage points." NEVAEH makes reference to the poet Lucille Clifton, Nas and the form of R&B, as well as "black pop culture, interludes and drifts."
All of the tracks were recorded in the artist's West Philadelphia flat, some with the input of frequent collaborator lawd knows (the duo produce and perform together as SCRAAATCH). She employs a range of new production techniques on NEVAEH, like live-sounding digital instrumentation, playing keys and using her voice in new ways—much of which was self-taught, "in the tradition of the musicians in her family who came before her."
MHYSA describes the album as "a prayer for Black women and femmes to be taken to or find a new and better world away from the apocalypse… NEVAEH is a safe space, a sort of negro heaven."
Listen to "Sanaa Lathan."
